Our Experiance in Kerala – God’s Own Country

Kerala, often called “God’s Own Country”, is a land where nature, culture, and serenity come together in perfect harmony. When we planned our Kerala tour package from Cochin, we knew it would be special, but the reality exceeded every expectation. From the lush green tea gardens of Munnar to the thrilling wildlife of Thekkady, and finally the dreamy backwaters of Alleppey, this 5-day journey was an experience of a lifetime.

Let me take you through my personal travel diary of this enchanting trip, so that if you’re planning your own Kerala holiday itinerary, you’ll know exactly why this is a must-do.

Day 1 – Our Exciting Start to Munnar (130 KM: 4 Hrs)

The excitement was almost impossible to contain as we landed at Cochin International Airport. Our friendly driver and guide welcomed us with a big smile, and from that very moment, our Kerala trip began to feel like family.

The drive from Cochin to Munnar was not just a transfer – it was an adventure in itself. As soon as we left the bustling city, the roads started winding through scenic valleys, spice plantations, and misty mountains. The air felt fresher with every kilometer, and the lush greenery instantly lifted our spirits.

Along the way, we made our first memorable stop at the Cheeyapara Waterfalls, where the cascading water created a white veil over the rocks. Just a few minutes ahead, the Valara Waterfalls greeted us with its roaring sound and scenic charm. We took photos, stretched our legs, and felt the first real taste of Kerala’s magic.

As we climbed higher into the Western Ghats, the view transformed into endless stretches of tea gardens. The neat, manicured plantations looked like green carpets rolling over the hills. The smell of fresh tea leaves, mixed with the earthy fragrance of spices, created a natural perfume in the air.

Finally, we reached Misty Lake Resort in Munnar, surrounded by clouds and cool winds. The resort itself was a dream – cozy rooms, breathtaking views, and a peaceful vibe that instantly made us feel at home. That evening, as mist rolled over the hills and crickets began their nightly symphony, we sat outside with hot cups of tea, knowing our Kerala trip had just begun.

Day 2 – Exploring Munnar Together (Local Sightseeing)

Our second day was packed with exploration and wonder. After an early breakfast, we headed straight to the Eravikulam National Park, one of the most famous places to visit in Kerala. Home to the rare Nilgiri Tahr, the park is also where you can spot Anamudi Peak, the tallest mountain in South India. Walking through the rolling hills blanketed with tea gardens and spotting wildlife in their natural habitat was an unforgettable experience.

Next, we visited the Rose Garden, a colorful paradise with vibrant blooms and exotic plants. Each flower seemed to tell its own story, and the garden felt like a canvas painted by nature itself.

Our journey continued to the Munnar Photo Point, a spot that looked straight out of a postcard. Surrounded by mountains and tea plantations, it was the perfect place to capture the essence of Munnar.

We then headed to Mattupetty Dam, a calm and scenic spot where the reservoir reflects the surrounding hills. At Echo Point, we couldn’t resist shouting our names and hearing them bounce back from the hills – it made us laugh like children.

Every turn in Munnar revealed another breathtaking view – tea estates, winding roads, and mist-covered valleys. By evening, we found ourselves at the local market, where we bought tea, spices, and handcrafted souvenirs. Walking through the lively streets, bargaining with shopkeepers, and tasting local snacks added a cultural flavor to our day.

That night, as we relaxed back at Misty Lake Resort, we realized that Munnar wasn’t just a destination – it was an experience that touched every sense.

Day 3 – Thrills in Thekkady (100 Km: 4 Hrs)

The next morning, we bid goodbye to Munnar and started our journey towards Thekkady, also known as Periyar. The road trip itself was beautiful, with rolling hills, dense forests, and spice plantations on both sides.

Our first stop was at a Spice Garden, where we learned about Kerala’s rich spice heritage. From cardamom to cinnamon, pepper to nutmeg, every plant had its own unique aroma and medicinal value. It was fascinating to see how Kerala truly is the spice capital of India.

The highlight of the day was the Elephant Safari, where we rode on these gentle giants through the forest. It felt surreal to be so close to these magnificent creatures and to experience nature from their perspective.

Once we checked into our resort – Peppervine Resort – we had some rest before heading out for the much-awaited boat ride on Periyar Lake. The calm waters surrounded by thick forests created an atmosphere of pure tranquility. As the boat moved, we spotted birds, deer, and even got a distant glimpse of wild elephants along the banks. This was the real Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary experience – peaceful yet thrilling.

Later in the evening, we explored more options – Jungle Jeep Safari, traditional Kathakali and Kalaripayattu cultural shows, Ayurvedic massages, and some shopping in Thekkady’s lively markets. Each experience added another layer to our Kerala adventure.

Day 4 – Enjoying Backwater Magic (140 Km: 4 Hrs)

From Thekkady, our trip took us to Kumarakom/Alleppey, the crown jewel of Kerala tourism. Known as the Venice of the East, the backwaters of Kerala are unlike anything else in the world.

We checked into a traditional Kerala houseboat, and the experience was straight out of a dream. The houseboat slowly glided through the calm waters, passing by swaying coconut trees, lush paddy fields, and quaint villages. Life along the backwaters moved at its own gentle pace – children waving from the banks, fishermen casting their nets, and women washing clothes by the canals.

As we lounged on the deck, sipping coconut water, the backwaters felt like a painting in motion. The highlight of the day was watching the sunset over the Vembanad Lake. The sky turned shades of orange, pink, and purple, reflecting on the rippling waters. It was a moment of pure magic – one that words can never fully capture.

At night, the houseboat was anchored, and we enjoyed a delicious Kerala meal with freshly caught fish. The silence of the backwaters, broken only by the soft sounds of water and crickets, made it one of the most peaceful nights of our trip. For those who prefer resorts, Lakesong Resort in Kumarakom is another excellent option for a luxurious lakeside stay.

Day 5 – Heading Home with Wonderful Memories

The final day of our Kerala trip arrived far too soon. After a hearty breakfast on the houseboat, we set off towards Cochin Airport/Station, our hearts heavy yet full of joy.

If time permits, Cochin itself has plenty to explore – Fort Kochi, Chinese Fishing Nets, Mattancherry Palace, and St. Francis Church are some of the must-visit attractions. But even without adding more, the trip already felt complete.

As we boarded our flight back home, we looked back at the past few days – misty mornings in Munnar, wild adventures in Thekkady, and dreamy sunsets on the backwaters. Kerala had given us not just a holiday, but an unforgettable journey that touched our souls.
