Ashtavinayak Temple
The Ashtavinayak Yatra is a spiritual pilgrimage to eight holy Ganesha temples located across Maharashtra, mostly around Pune. These temples are known as the Ashtavinayak temples, and each one has a unique history, legend, and form of Lord Ganesha.
Doing the full Ashtavinayak Darshan in the traditional order is believed to bring peace, success, and removal of obstacles from life. Many devotees plan this journey as a weekend or 2-day Ashtavinayak tour, especially from Pune or Mumbai.
Jejuri – Khandoba Temple
Jejuri, about 50 km from Pune, is a famous pilgrimage site in Maharashtra known for the Lord Khandoba Temple. This hilltop temple requires climbing around 200 steps and is renowned for the vibrant turmeric (haldi) celebrations during prayers. Jejuri is often included in religious tours like the Ashtavinayak Yatra due to its spiritual significance and stunning views of the surrounding area.
Prati Balaji Temple – Narayanpur
Located near Narayanpur village, around 50 km from Pune, Prati Balaji Temple is a beautiful replica of the famous Tirupati Balaji Temple. Though not part of the Ashtavinayak temples, this South Indian-style temple is a popular spiritual stop for many on their Ashtavinayak tour.

List of the Eight Ashtavinayak Temples
1. Mayureshwar – Morgaon
This is the starting and ending point of the Ashtavinayak Yatra. Lord Ganesha here is seen riding a peacock.
The temple is located on the banks of the Karha River and is surrounded by a small town. It is the most important among all Ashtavinayak temples and is considered the central shrine. The idol is self-manifested (Swayambhu) and has a beautiful silver-covered sanctum.
2. Siddhivinayak – Siddhatek
Known for its unique right-trunk idol, this temple is a key stop in the Ashtavinayak Darshan.
It is believed that Lord Vishnu worshipped Ganesha here to defeat demons. The temple is located on a hillock beside the Bhima River and can be reached by climbing a set of steps. Devotees often walk around the hill (pradakshina) as part of their Ashtavinayak tour.
3. Ballaleshwar – Pali
Named after a devoted boy, Ballal. It is one of the most visited Ashtavinayak temples for its serene atmosphere.
The temple is unique because the idol faces east and has eyes made of diamonds. A bell gifted by Chimaji Appa after winning the Vasai Fort war is also seen here. The temple structure resembles a fort and is known for its architecture.
4. Varad Vinayak – Mahad
Situated near a lake, this temple allows direct access to the idol – rare among the Ashtavinayak temples.
The lamp inside the sanctum has been burning continuously since 1892. The temple is small and peaceful, ideal for a short stop on your Ashtavinayak tour. It is believed that praying here fulfills wishes and grants success.
5. Chintamani – Theur
Perfect for those seeking peace of mind. A key highlight of any Ashtavinayak tour.
The name “Chintamani” means the gem that removes worries, symbolizing peace and clarity. The temple is closely linked to the famous Peshwa rulers who maintained it. The idol is seated in a yogic posture with its trunk to the left.
6. Girijatmaj – Lenyadri
A cave temple is located in the hills. This is where Ganesha is believed to have taken birth.
It is the only temple among the Ashtavinayak temples that is located inside a Buddhist cave complex. You need to climb 300 steps carved in stone to reach the shrine. The peaceful view from the top makes it worth the effort.
7. Vighnahar – Ozar
Represents Ganesha as the remover of obstacles (Vighna). A must-visit on the Ashtavinayak Yatra.
The temple is fortified and has a deep well inside the complex. Its golden dome and beautifully sculpted entrance attract many visitors. Ozar is especially popular during Ganesh festivals and draws large crowds.
8. Mahaganapati – Ranjangaon
The final stop before returning to Morgaon. Lord Ganesha here is in a powerful warrior form.
The idol here is said to be large and majestic, symbolizing strength and victory. It is believed that Lord Shiva worshipped this form before battling a demon. This temple plays a significant role in completing the Ashtavinayak Darshan.
